High demand for additional services and an extension of train timetables on the Costa del Sol during the busy summer months.

The train line that runs between Fuengirola and Malaga is a major transportation route that draws in more than 11.5 million passengers each year. This line is considered to be one of the most profitable in the country per square kilometer due to its high ridership numbers. The train service is used by both tourists and locals, with many residents relying on it for their daily commutes.

During the summer season, when the Costa del Sol sees a surge in tourism, the mayor of Fuengirola, Ana Mula, has called for additional trains to be put in place to reduce wait times. She is urging the Spanish government to extend the timetables of the local Cercanías trains and to allow trains to run until 3am during public holidays or when major events are taking place in the municipalities where the trains pass through.

Mula is a strong advocate of sustainable mobility, and she believes that public transportation should be promoted over private vehicles, particularly for urban journeys. She argues that the government should prioritize environmentally sustainable policies and align with the 2030 Agenda that all institutions are adopting.

The train line between Fuengirola and Malaga not only serves tourists but also locals who travel between towns for work or study. Therefore, it is essential to have a reliable and efficient transportation service to meet the needs of both groups. Mula's proposal to increase train services and extend timetables during peak periods is aimed at meeting this demand and promoting sustainable mobility on the Costa del Sol.
