On Labour Day, residents and tourists in La Cala de Mijas, Malaga, will have the opportunity to indulge in over 600 kilograms of free sardines. The Mijas Town Council announced on April 26 that it will be hosting its traditional 'sardinada' on May 1 in La Cala de Mijas, where freshly-cooked sardines will be offered to all attendees. Tamara Vera, the councillor responsible for the feast of fish, revealed that the sardines will be free for everyone, and that live music will be playing from midday onwards, creating a festive atmosphere.
According to the mayor of Mijas, Josele González, almost 100 kilograms more sardines will be cooked compared to last year, when around 2,500 plates of sardines were distributed. González also mentioned that they will be reviving the tradition of having municipal workers skewer the sardines in the traditional way on the sand, which will provide for spectacular photographs of the sardines placed on the beach in Cala de Mijas.
This popular event attracts a lot of visitors, and in addition to the free sardines, there will be live music and a large marquee to provide shade. The marquee will host musical activities to complement the sardinada, making the festival a great family event. The Neighbourhood Association Santa Teresa will be responsible for running the bar, which will offer popular prices. This party will go on well into the afternoon, and anyone who has attended in previous years will attest to the great atmosphere that exists on this festive day.
